David Close, M.D.
Dr. David Close began his interest in coin collecting at about age 6, when his grandfather introduced him to the hobby. He has been collecting ever since, with varying interests and degrees of involvement.
In 1993, he was introduced to VAM collecting by a Coin World article describing a newly discovered Peace Dollar doubled die. When a trip to the local coin store netted him an example, he was hooked! Soon afterward, he was able to connect with the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors (SSDC).
In searching through Peace dollars for varieties, he soon realized that, compared to Morgans, the series was largely unexplored. Since then, he has discovered nearly a quarter of the currently listed Peace Dollar VAM varieties and co-authored 2 books on Peace Dollars.
When Leroy Van Allen retired, Dr. Close was tapped to do the examination and listing of new Peace Dollar varieties, as well as revisions of previous listings. This is still a work in progress, and everyone is invited to participate.
